Support rural children to get Class X coaching

The only school in Mayamankurichi, Tirunelveli and for hamlets in a 3 km radius is the Hindu Higher Secondary School. 104 children are to take the Class X exams from this school. Children from rural schools are severely under-prepared to take the examination. Children in partially aided and unaided schools have been away from school for months. They have not had ability to attend classes since they do not have Internet/videoconferencing facilities to take online coaching.

Since the schools have not collected fees for this academic year, they are not able to pay the unaided teachers and hence Class X students have not been given last-minute exam coaching.

They will need to pay 10 teachers Rs 200 per day for 10 days to help out the children. Along with the pay for support staff and stationary costs, this comes to a total of Rs 30,000. The schools have been instructed not to collect any of the costs from the students.

Last-minute coaching is critical for borderline students. I am also aware that for many lower-income families, they will not have the ability to finance education for a second attempt. We may see a high number of students drop out of studies after failing Class X. This will affect the educational profile of this entire batch of students.

A sum of Rs 30,000 will help these students tide over this difficult situation
